Please Welcome Charletta, the Newest Possum!

I first met Charletta originally through Seth Oster, a musician who came to me for flatfooting lessons. After a couple of lessons he brought his friend Charletta and I taught them both a few times. I would see Charletta occasionally at area festivals and events, including last spring at The Parkfield Bluegrass Festival. It was the first time the Possums were not performing; I was there to teach my flatfoot workshop and dance with The SLO County Stumblers, and as it turned out, Rebecca, Susan and Lisa were there to teach their harmony workshop. Charletta and I were chatting – she asked why we weren’t performing.  I explained that Sierra had left the band to return to school in a pre-med program (is there anything that girl can’t do!!!), we were all needing a break for various reasons, and we were in the midst of re-grouping and looking for a Sierra replacement. Charletta then told me that she grew up singing 4 part harmony in church and plays Old Time fiddle, and her ultimate dream was to be a Possum. Who knew! I suggested she go to the harmony workshop – I didn’t want to say anything but hoped they would notice her. Then, at the last minute I hedged, and told Lisa to keep an eye out for Charletta – I didn’t want to leave it entirely to chance.A few weeks later, I asked the gals if they remembered her and filled them in on her details. Rebecca volunteered to invite her to come up from Ventura for an afternoon of fiddling together, and check her out that way. And soon after, welcome Charletta, the newest Possum! I’m personally thrilled – I’m no longer the shortest one in the band!
